Maintenance dredging of a portion of the Guilford Harbor in Guilford, Conn., will be completed under the terms of a $2.2 million contract recently signed between Coastline Consulting and Development, LLC, of Madison, Conn., and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District.

Dredging is scheduled to start around November 15, 2014 and will take about 10 weeks to complete. The contract was awarded on September 23, 2014.
“The dredging work will include the main federal navigation channel, an anchorage located in the East River, approximately 100 feet by 1,500 feet, and the 55-foot wide, 800-foot long Sluice Creek Chanel which connects the Guilford marina to the main federal navigation channel,” said Project Manager Daniel Stenstream, of the Corps’ Programs and Project Management Division in Concord, Mass. “In addition to these areas, the town of Guilford marina may also be dredged.”

Approximately 60,000 total cubic yards of sandy material will be dredged from the main channel, anchorage, Sluice Creek and marina. A mechanical dredge using various types of clamshell buckets will remove material from the shoaled portions of the Guilford Harbor federal navigation channel and marina, place it in scows that will be towed to the Central Long Island Disposal Area in Long Island Sound for disposal of dredged material.

The authorized federal project includes a navigation channel 6 feet deep below mean lower low water (MLLW) and 100 feet wide extending approximately 6,000 linear feet from the confluence of the East and Neck Rivers out into Guilford Harbor.

Dear Guilford Boater,

Due to severe shoaling in the Guilford Federal channel, the mooring field, and the marina basin, dredging has been scheduled for this Fall. The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is coordinating this project. The bids are due by September 8, 2014. A contractor will be selected shortly thereafter. The dredging, by regulation, must take place between October1, 2014 and January 31, 2015.
Until the contract is awarded we will not know the exact start date for this project.

It is anticipated that dredging would start no earlier than October 15, 2014. Please make plans to have your boat moved by that date at the latest.

Unlike past dredges that were managed by the Marina Commission, this project is being managed by the USACE. There is a possibility that boats will not have to be removed by October 15, 2014 but there is also a remote possibility that boats will have to be removed by October 1, 2014. We should have an exact start date announcement around September 15, 2014. As soon as we are advised of a firm date you will be notified. We are working closely with the USACE so that you can plan accordingly.

There will be no extended season for 2014.

Because the shoaling was caused by tropical storm Sandy the cost for dredging the Federal channel and anchorage will be paid for by Federal FEMA funds. State of Connecticut funds will pay for dredging the marina basin.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Guilford Marina Commission
Hank Graver, Chairman
